In this talk, Oana Frunza will go over a selection of high-level financial applications where NLP solutions facilitate increased efficiencies and generate competitive advantages.
Then, she will go into detail on an information extraction application that uses Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) statements.
The methodology can identify, extract, and assign sentiment scores to important economic factors e.g. unemployment, economic activity, etc. that are mentioned in the statements.

Vice President of AI research, Machine Learning Research Department at Morgan Stanley
Ph.D. Oana Frunza is Vice President of AI research in the AI/ML Center of Excellence at Morgan Stanley. Her research interests are in the field of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in Natural Language Understanding, Information Extraction, Medical, and Financial informatics.
She joined the Firm in 2018 and has been focused on using textual data to solve and improve various financial problems. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, she worked as a senior researcher at Nuance Communications. She is the recipient of several awards and scholarships, and author of a book, and more than 20 works that have been published in prestigious journals, conferences, and book chapters.
